Ray Ceramic Studio offers ceramic classes for all levels, from beginner to advanced. We are in an accessible location, just a 9-minute walk from JR Shibuya Station in Tokyo. Let’s have fun making ceramics together!

Studio equipment

There are 4 electric wheels, hand-building tables, a spray glazing station, and an electric kiln. We have 10 clay bodies, more than 20 glazes, various colors of slip, underglaze colors for decoration, and plaster for mold-making.
– Basic tools, materials, and aprons are all provided in the classroom. There is no need to bring anything except your enthusiasm!
– For wheel throwing, we recommend wearing pants (trousers) rather than a skirt. Please make sure your nails are trimmed to a manageable length.

Trial Lessons

Trial lessons are available. You can make small plates, a cup, or a bowl using hand-building techniques. No experience is required. Feel free to make a reservation.

1day Lesson:Slab Plates

Small Plates:¥4,400/ 1day lesson
Recommended for Those Who Want to Create Freely!

This is a one-day trial using the slab-building technique. You will roll out the clay, freely decorate it, and shape it into your desired form.
After you complete the shaping process, the instructor will handle the coloring.

1day Lesson:Bowl

Small Bowl:¥4,400/ 1day lesson
Recommended for Those Who Want to Create Casually!

Pottery pieces go through three main stages before completion: [Shaping (forming a large structure)] → [Trimming] → [Glazing & Coloring].
In the “One-time Trial: Hand-building (Pinchpot Technique)”, you will experience only the shaping process. After that, the instructor will handle the trimming, firing, and coloring.

It takes approximately 1.5 to 2 months for the final piece to be completed.

Beginning Pottery

This course will introduce beginners to basic hand-building pottery methods, including coil, pinch, and slab techniques. Glazing and decorating methods will also be covered.

Mug cup, soup bowl, fish plate, rice bowl, flat bowl, flower vase, tokkuri and ochoko, art pieces, etc.

Throwing and Advanced Hand-Building courses are available for those who have completed this course.

Advanced Wheel Throwing

For those who have mastered the basic skills of pottery, we’ve designed courses that take you to the next level. In this course, we introduce the skills of working with clay on the potter’s wheel and provide you with an understanding of what it takes to use it.

The instructors will demonstrate and assign class projects, such as bowls, covered jars, pitchers, or vases, and advanced students will be encouraged to work independently.

Students will be encouraged to conduct glaze tests and incorporate the results into their pottery.
